LAND BIOMES

DESERT
Characteristics:

- Deserts are the world's driest regions.
- The animals that live in the desert are able to survive with little or no water.
- Deserts are areas of little rain or rainfall restricted to a short period during the year.
- The great deserts of the world occur at about 30 degrees latitude on both sides of the equator.
- The Sahara and the Australian desert are examples of famous deserts around the world.

Plants and Animals:
- The vegetation we can find there are the cactus, like the barrel cactus, the old man cactus, the saguaro cactus etc.
- Camels store water and fat in its hump to survive.
- The Kangaroo rat gets all the moisture it needs from solid foot; it can go its entire life without drinking water.
- We can also found other animals such as lizards, snakes, rats, addax etc.

GRASSLANDS
Characteristics:
- Grasslands are also known by ecologists as “Prairie”.
- An example of grassland in North America is the Great Plains region of the continent. Nowadays they have disappeared because of agriculture.
- Grasslands are typically areas where either low total annual rainfall (10-20 inches) or uneven seasonal occurrence of rainfall favor grasses and herbaceous plants to trees.
- Special soil conditions sometimes also favor grasslands over other types of vegetation.
Plants and animals:
- Prairie consists of tall grasses and a tremendous diversity of other herbaceous plants.
- You can also find flowers such as sweet cornflower, purple cornflower etc.
- In prairies you can find animals such as Zebras, Bison, Ferrets, Lions, the greater prairie chicken, the prairie dog etc.

TUNDRA
Characteristics:

- Tundra is characterized by the extremely cold temperatures.
- In the land of tundra you can find the permafrost, a layer of permanently frozed subsoil.
- Tundra is found in Alaska, Canada and Siberia.
- There is another region called alpine tundra, which is found on the tops of tall, cold mountains.
- The annual precipitation is very low, usually less than 10 inches.
Plants and Animals:
- The plants growing in the tundra are often small and grow close to the ground. The landscape is often covered with rocks.
- We can found plants such as the dark red leaves.
- Must of the animals have fur to survive the cold temperatures such as the Artic Fox and the polar bear, we can also find animals like the caribou etc.

TEMPERATE DECIDOUS FOREST
Characteristics:
- It has the four seasons: winter, spring, summer, and fall.
- It is located in the eastern half of the United States, Canada, Europe, parts of Russia, China, and Japan.
Animals and Plants:
- Animals and plants have special adaptations to cope with these yearly changes.

TAIGA
Characteristics:

- Taiga stretches across a large portion of Canada, Europe and Asia. It is the largest biome in the world. Winters are cold. Summers are warm. Lots of conifers grow here.
- You will find long nights in the winter and long days in the summer.
Plants and Animals:
- Taiga trees tend to be conifers. Conifers, many of which are evergreen, produce cones in late winter or early fall.

- We can find squirrels, moose, snowshoe rabbits, hawk owl etc.

RAIN FOREST
Characteristics:
- There are two types of rain forests: the temperate and the tropical.
- Tropical rainforests are found close to the equator. Temperate rainforests are found along coasts in the temperate zone, such as the Pacific Northwest of the USA.
Plants and Animals:
- You can find plants such as lianas, bark, Drip tips, buttresses, bromeliads, bamboo, cacao, vanilla etc.
- You can find animals like Bearded Pig, tapir, chimpanzee, gorilla, Indian cobra, vine snake etc.

WHAT IS A BIOME?
A biome is a large geographical area characterized by certain types of plants and animals. A biome is defined by the complex interactions of plants and animals with the climate, soil types, water resources, and latitude (position north or south on the globe) of an area.
